Somewhere in Sydney right now, someone's asking ChatGPT to pick a business like yours.
Maybe it's a bookkeeper choosing an accountant. Maybe it's someone looking for a decent electrician in the Inner West. Either way, an AI just gave them two or three names. Were you one of them?
A business owner, sitting in Surry Hills or Parramatta or wherever, opens ChatGPT out of curiosity and types something like "who's the best [their category] in Sydney." They're not even checking their own ranking. They're just curious what AI would say. Then their stomach drops a little, because the answer names three competitors and not them.
We've heard some version of that story more times than we can count. It's a strange feeling, being genuinely good at what you do and finding out the machine has never heard of you. The good news is it's fixable. It's just a different kind of fixable than SEO, which is the whole reason this page exists.
It's just a crowded city, that's the honest answer
Sydney has more finance, professional services and tech businesses squeezed into one place than anywhere else in the country. Which means whatever category you're in, an AI answering a question about it in Sydney has plenty of names to pick from. That's not a small detail, it's the whole game. The model isn't loyal to whoever's been around longest or spent the most on ads. It picks whoever it can describe clearly and confidently.
The flip side is that a lot of these "best of Sydney" answers are still genuinely up for grabs. Nobody's locked them in yet. That's the part worth moving on before someone else does.
A few Sydney categories we know well
We spend a lot of our time with financial and professional services firms, since trust and a clean, consistent identity matter more there than in almost any other category. We also work with Sydney's tech and SaaS crowd, where getting mentioned in a "best software for X" answer is worth more than another round of ads. Add to that hospitality and tourism businesses, who live or die by "best restaurant" or "things to do" style prompts, and trades and home services, where a plumber with consistent reviews and listings genuinely outperforms one without, no matter how long they've been in business.
This sits on top of your SEO. It doesn't replace it.
If your Google Business Profile is a mess or your site's basic SEO isn't sorted, fix that first. It still matters for regular search, AI or no AI. What we do is the next layer on top of that. Your SEO person keeps doing their job, we handle the part aimed specifically at ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini.
If you want the longer version of this argument, we wrote a whole page about it. Short version: nobody should be telling you to drop your SEO for this.
