VISIBILITY

AI Brand Visibility

Being the market leader offline doesn't mean much if a smaller competitor is the one showing up every time someone asks an AI system for a recommendation in your category.

What it is

What we're actually measuring

AI Brand Visibility is the measurement of how often, and how favourably, your brand appears across AI answer engines compared to named competitors, using a consistent set of real buyer questions.

This is a benchmarking exercise, not a one-off audit. We build a set of real questions your buyers actually ask, run them repeatedly across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Overviews, and record whether you're mentioned, how you're mentioned, and who's mentioned alongside you.

The output is closer to a market share number than a vanity metric. A visibility score on its own doesn't mean much without knowing what your named competitors are scoring on the same questions, so competitor comparison is built into the measurement from the start rather than added on afterwards.

Why it matters

Why offline reputation and AI visibility can diverge sharply

We've measured categories where the company with the strongest brand recognition offline barely shows up in AI-generated answers, while a smaller, newer competitor appears constantly, simply because their content happened to be more structured and citable. The AI systems don't know or care about market share. They cite whatever's easiest to retrieve and easiest to quote.

That gap is usually invisible until someone actually measures it, because nobody's typing these questions into ChatGPT and screenshotting the results as part of their normal marketing reporting. It tends to surface only when a founder or a salesperson happens to ask an AI assistant something and doesn't like what comes back.

Our approach

How we measure it

01

Build the prompt set

We put together the real informational and comparison questions your buyers ask, based on your category, not a generic keyword list.

02

Baseline measurement

We run the full prompt set across the major AI engines and record whether, how, and alongside whom your brand appears.

03

Competitor benchmarking

The same prompts get run for your named competitors, so your score means something relative rather than sitting in isolation.

04

Recurring measurement

We rerun the set on a monthly or quarterly cadence, since AI answers shift as models get updated.

05

Plain reporting

You get the actual numbers and the actual answer text, not a proprietary index that hides how the score was calculated.

What's included

What you actually get

  • A prompt set built specifically for your category
  • A baseline AI visibility score across the major engines
  • Side by side competitor comparison on identical prompts
  • Recurring tracking reports on a schedule you choose
  • The raw answer text behind every score, not just a summary number

Frequently asked

Questions about visibility measurement

How is a visibility score actually calculated?+
We weight three things: whether you're mentioned at all, how prominently (a named recommendation versus a passing mention), and how many of the target engines return you on a given question. It's a transparent formula, not a black box, and we'll walk you through exactly how your number was reached.
Can two runs of the same prompt give different answers?+
Yes, and that's expected. Generated answers have some natural variability between runs. That's exactly why we use a repeated prompt set and look at the pattern across it, rather than treating any single query as definitive.
Do you track sentiment as well as presence?+
Yes. Being mentioned neutrally, being recommended favourably, and being mentioned with a caveat attached are three different outcomes, and we report on all three rather than collapsing them into one number.
How often should visibility actually be re-measured?+
It depends on how fast your category moves and how often the relevant models get updated. Monthly is common for competitive categories, quarterly is often enough for slower-moving ones. We'll recommend a cadence based on what we see in your first few measurement cycles.
