Answer Engine Optimisation

Most pages are written to be scanned by a person and skimmed by a crawler. AEO rewrites the same content so an AI system can pull one sentence out of it, quote that sentence word for word, and attribute it to you.

What it is

What Answer Engine Optimisation actually does

Answer Engine Optimisation is the practice of writing and formatting content so an AI answer engine can extract a single, correct, self-contained answer from it and cite your brand as the source.

It sounds simple until you look at how most business content is actually written. A typical service page opens with a paragraph about the industry, moves into a paragraph about the company's history, and only gets to the actual answer somewhere around the third or fourth paragraph. A human reader will scroll past that. A model pulling a quick answer usually won't wait that long, so it either grabs a competitor's clearer sentence or skips your page entirely.

AEO fixes the order of operations. The direct answer goes first, in plain language, as a sentence that could stand completely on its own if someone copied and pasted it somewhere else. Supporting detail, caveats and context come after, not before.

Structure matters as much as wording. Clean heading hierarchy, one question per section, and FAQ blocks marked up with FAQPage schema all make it easier for a model to isolate the exact passage that answers a given prompt, rather than guessing which paragraph is relevant.

Why it matters

Why this is different from writing better SEO copy

We regularly see well-ranked pages that never get quoted by ChatGPT or Perplexity, because ranking well and being quotable are not the same skill. A page can be keyword-optimised, backlinked and sitting in position two, and still bury its actual answer under three paragraphs of scene-setting that a model has no reason to wade through.

The fix is usually smaller than people expect. It's rarely a full rewrite. Most of the time it's moving the existing answer up, cutting the throat-clearing intro, and adding a short, honest FAQ section that mirrors how people actually phrase the question when they're typing it into a chat window instead of a search bar.

Our approach

How we run an AEO project

01

Query mapping

We collect the real questions your buyers type into ChatGPT and Perplexity in your category, not the keywords you'd normally target in a search tool. These are longer, more conversational, and often phrased as direct questions.

02

Content audit

We check whether your existing pages already answer those questions, and if so, where the answer sits. Buried past the second paragraph is the most common issue we find.

03

Rewriting for extraction

Priority pages get restructured so the direct answer opens each relevant section, with supporting detail and nuance placed after it, not before.

04

Schema and structure

FAQ blocks get FAQPage schema, headings get cleaned up into a proper hierarchy, and anything that reads as ambiguous or hedged gets tightened into a plain, quotable statement.

05

Testing across engines

We run your target questions through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews before and after, and tell you plainly what changed and what didn't.

Frequently asked

AEO questions we get asked a lot

What's the difference between AEO and normal SEO copywriting?+
AEO cares about whether a single sentence can stand alone as a complete, correct answer. Traditional SEO copywriting cares more about keyword placement, length and internal linking. A page can rank well and still never get quoted by an AI system if the actual answer is buried in paragraph four.
Does AEO replace the SEO work I'm already doing?+
No. You still need indexable pages, solid technical SEO and a reasonable link profile, since AI systems still rely on the open web for a lot of what they retrieve. AEO changes how the content on those pages is written and structured, it doesn't replace the plumbing underneath it.
Which pages should get AEO treatment first?+
Pages that already answer one specific, well-defined question tend to respond fastest: comparison pages, pricing pages, glossary-style definitions, and "how does X work" explainers. These are the easiest type of content for a model to lift cleanly.
How long before I see results from AEO work?+
It depends partly on how often a given model refreshes its retrieval sources for your topic, which is outside anyone's control. In test queries we sometimes see a change within days of a rewrite going live, and sometimes it takes longer. We track it honestly rather than promising a fixed timeline.
